Manly sits directly on the bay with the boat harbour at its foot, and that is the single biggest thing acting on its driveways. Salt arrives on the breeze and, on the streets closest to the water, as spray on a windy day. It works into the concrete and keeps the surface damp enough for mould to hold on.

Manly is also a boat suburb. Trailers get reversed up the same driveway week after week, and jockey wheels, trailer stands and hitch feet leave rust rings and gouged scuff marks. Outboard drips and bilge water add oil spotting near the top of the drive.

What salt air and boat traffic do to a Manly driveway
Salt does not stain concrete by itself. What it does is hold moisture in the surface, and constant moisture is what lets algae, mould and lichen establish. That is why a Manly driveway can look green again quickly even when nothing has been spilled on it.
The boat gear is a separate problem. Steel sitting on damp concrete leaves a rust ring that has soaked into the slab rather than sitting on it, and a general clean will lighten it without lifting it. Those spots need treating individually.
