Driveway cleaning in Cleveland
What actually gets on a driveway here, and why it holds.
- 01
Cleveland sits on the water at the end of the Redlands peninsula, and the salt exposure here is the same story as the northern bayside. Salt-laden air keeps concrete surfaces damp, and damp concrete grows algae and mould.
- 02
The suburb has two clear generations of driveway. Older bayside cottages on narrow, thin concrete strips, and newer homes and canal-side builds on wide aggregate and paved frontages. They are often on the same street.
- 03
Cleveland is a boating suburb, and it shows on the concrete. Trailers reversed up the same driveway leave jockey wheel rust rings and scuff, and outboards and tenders drip oil where they are parked between trips.
- 04
The foreshore streets and the older pockets around them have big mature trees and sea breezes that carry leaf litter onto the slab. Tannin staining on top of salt-driven growth is the usual combination we find here.

How a Cleveland driveway clean runs
- 01
Assess and quote on site
We look at the surface, the growth and any spot staining, and give you the price before anything is switched on. Salt bloom and soft old concrete are not things you can judge from a photo.
- 02
Pre-treat growth, rust and oil separately
Algae and lichen, iron staining and oil are three different problems. Each gets its own treatment and its own time to work.
- 03
Machine clean at the right pressure
An even rotary surface-cleaner pass, set to what the slab in front of us can take, working top down so run-off never crosses finished ground.
- 04
Hand-detail the edges
Kerb line, expansion joints, the strip against the garden and the path to the door, all of which a surface cleaner cannot reach into.
- 05
Rinse and leave it tidy
The whole area including the crossover and footpath is rinsed down, with run-off kept out of garden beds where we can.

We're Wynnum West based, so Cleveland is a short run. Tell us the surface and roughly how big it is and we'll price it.
- 01
You tell us the surface
Concrete, aggregate or pavers, roughly how big, and what has stained it. A photo helps but is not needed.
- 02
We come back with a price
For the area and the work involved, including anything that needs pre-treating. Nothing starts before you have seen it.
- 03
We book a time that suits
Most driveways are a single visit. You do not need to be home, as long as we can reach a tap and the cars are moved.

What salt air does to a Cleveland driveway
Salt does not discolour concrete on its own. What it does is stay in the surface and hold moisture there, so the slab never really dries between rain events.
Permanently damp concrete is ideal for algae, mould and lichen, which is why bayside Redlands driveways go green faster than driveways a few kilometres inland with the same shade and the same trees.
- Black and green growth across shaded sections and along the fence line
- White salt bloom and efflorescence rising through older concrete near the water
- Lichen spotting, the flat grey-green discs that take a proper pre-treatment to remove
- Tannin blush under mature trees on the foreshore streets
- Slippery patches on paths and the driveway edge after rain

The four Cleveland driveway types and the method each one needs.
The point of listing them is that one pressure setting does not suit all four. The old cottage concrete and the new aggregate would both be damaged by what a sound mid-era slab handles easily.
Boats, trailers and the marks they leave
In a suburb with this much water access, a lot of driveways spend their week under a trailer. Steel feet and jockey wheels sitting on damp bayside concrete rust quickly, and the mark soaks into the slab.
Rust marks are treatable, not always removable
Rust from trailer gear is iron that has penetrated the concrete rather than dirt sitting on it. A dedicated rust treatment lifts most of it and often all of it, but a mark that has been there for years on porous concrete can lighten considerably without fully disappearing. We will say which one yours looks like before we start.
Oil and fuel spotting near the top of the drive gets a degreaser rather than pressure, because forcing it only drives it deeper into the surface.

FAQ
Driveway cleaning in Cleveland: FAQs
What people in Cleveland ask us most.
1Does Cleveland's bayside position make driveways dirtier?
It makes them grow more. Salt in the air stays in the concrete surface and holds moisture there, so the slab rarely dries out fully and algae and lichen establish faster than a few kilometres inland. Shaded sections near the foreshore go first and worst.
2Can you remove the rust ring where my boat trailer sits?
Usually most of it. Trailer rust is iron that has soaked into the concrete rather than sitting on it, so it needs a dedicated rust treatment before the general clean. Long-standing marks on porous older concrete can lighten a great deal without disappearing entirely.
3What is the white powdery film on my older Cleveland driveway?
That is efflorescence — salts moving up through the concrete and crystallising on the surface as it dries. It is common on older bayside slabs. It can be cleaned off, though it may return over time because the source is inside the concrete, not on it.
4Do you cover Ormiston, Thornlands and Wellington Point too?
Yes. The whole Cleveland end of the Redlands is within our service area, along with Capalaba, Alexandra Hills and Redland Bay. Jobs in neighbouring streets are usually easy to schedule together, so mention it if a neighbour wants theirs done as well.
5Should I clean before or after summer?
Either works, but before the wet season is the more useful time here. Pre-treating and clearing growth before a humid summer stops it establishing deeply, which means a lighter treatment next time. Cleaning after a wet summer is fixing it rather than heading it off.
